Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn | 24 mai 2008

Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

Using vigorous lines Rembrandt has drawn a corpulent man leaning across a table-top with his arms crossed. The man's floppy hat tilts forward slightly, casting a shadow onto his podgy face. Rembrandt used brown gallnut ink - a type containing iron - and this has run in most places in the portrait. He used his finger to smear the ink to indicate shadow. The subject is Willem Ruyter, an actor who features in several of Rembrandt's drawings. On this occasion Rembrandt portrays him as a peasant, wearing a smock and a shapeless hat. Ruyter may have performed frequently in the 'boertigheden', popular burlesques with a country yokel in the principal role, a favourite at Amsterdam's theatres.

Rembrandt Van Rijn | 24 décembre 2007

The man portrayed here, Dr Ephraim Bueno (1599-1665), was a well-known Jewish physician and man of letters. Rembrandt painted this sketch in oils in 1647. It is a preliminary study for an etching of Dr Bueno. It is the only known sketch in oils for a portrait print by Rembrandt.

Portrait of Saskia van Uylenburgh (1612-1642) | 30 octobre 2007

Artist  Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn  Year 1633

Rembrandt painted this portrait of Saskia Uylenburgh in 1633. She was twenty years old at the time and had just become engaged to Rembrandt. They were married a year later. Saskia was the niece of the art dealer Hendrick Uylenburgh, in whose house Rembrandt lived in Amsterdam. Rembrandt had moved to Amsterdam in 1631 where he remained for the rest of his life. From the moment he arrived he received many commissions for portraits, producing more than fifty in the first year alone.

The Jewish bride by Rembrandt | 04 octobre 2007

An elegantly dressed man and woman are in a vague, dark room. The man has lovingly placed his arm around the woman's shoulder and a hand on her breast. Very carefully she touches his hand with her fingertips. Both are staring straight ahead, they seem deep in thought. A few objects can be recognised in the obscure background: beside the woman is a plant in a pot and behind her an architectural fragment. The picture, called the 'Jewish Bride', was painted by Rembrandt in 1667. It is one of the most famous and mysterious paintings in the museum's collection.

Jewish bride?

The painting became known as the 'Jewish Bride' in the early nineteenth century after the Amsterdam art collector, Van der Hoop, identified the subject of the painting as a Jewish father hanging a necklace around his daughter's neck on her wedding day.
Today, no one sees this man has the woman's father anymore. It is clearly a couple, although who they are is not clear. The faces appear to be portraits, but the clothes are unusual for the time. Perhaps they were contemporaries of Rembrandt's who posed as characters from the Bible.

Rembrandt Self Portrait | 30 septembre 2007

Artist
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

Rembrandt was about 22 when he drew this self portrait. The manner in which it is drawn is loose and sketch-like. His characteristic features, the unkempt head of curly hair, the wide nose and faint moustache, are accurately captured. Rembrandt began by sketching his face in pen and brown ink, showing the contrast between light and shadow. He then reworked the drawing with brush and grey ink. This was a rare combination of techniques for Rembrandt.
