U.S., Arab countries exchange ideas on Mideast peace | 30 septembre 2009

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met over the weekend with representatives of several Arab nations, calling on the Arab states to help end the deadlock by offering goodwill gestures to the Israelis.

At the same time, an Arab League official said he wants the United States to make public its plans for rebooting the Israeli-Palestinian peace process as soon as possible.

The Arab world is to some extent disappointed by U.S. President Barack Obama's speech during the United Nations General Assembly, analysis said, suggesting that if no progress is swift regarding the peace process, there is a chance that Washington will lose Arab interest following the momentum created by the Obama-Netanyahu-Abbas parley.

"SOMETHING FOR NOTHING"

The Obama administration is aimed to persuade what it describes as the "moderate" Arab states to send a signal to Israel that making a peace deal with the Palestinians will result in the establishment of relations between Israel and all its regional neighbors.

However, all similar requests have been rejected so far by Saudi Arabia, a leading force behind the Arab peace initiative.
