Rick Astley to replace Boy George HERE & NOW TOUR | 19 janvier 2009

RICK Astley has stepped in to replace Boy George on the Here & Now Tour after the former Culture Club singer was jailed for 15 months for handcuffing a male escort to a wall and beating him with a metal chain.

The man behind the hits Never Going To Give You Up and Together Forever will now headline the eighties tour which comes to the Trent FM Arena on May 16.

He'll be joined by Kim Wilde, Howard Jones, Kid Creole & the Coconuts, Altered Images, Brother Beyond and Hazel O Connor.

Boy George, whose real name is George O'Dowd, was handed his sentence on Friday for falsely imprisoning Audun Carlsen during a drug-fuelled naked photoshoot at his flat in Shoreditch, east London.

First picture of jailed star

SHAMED pop star Boy George sits in his cell writing notes — in the first picture of him taken inside.

The roly poly singer scribbles on a pad during the first hours of his 15-month sentence.

George, 47, is said to be terrified of attack in jail and has already angered fellow inmates by lining up a soft job in the canteen.

He is set to earn £6 a week as a server, dishing out meals to lags on A Wing of HMP Pentonville in North London, where he is doing time for imprisoning and beating a rent boy.

One inmate told a pal on the outside: “It won't go down well if he's seen to get special privileges. People have to wait weeks before they're given cushy jobs.”

Gay George revealed his fear of being targeted over his sexuality while in a holding cell at court on Friday.

Richard Lyttle, 40, who was up on a driving charge, said: “He was shaking like a leaf, a total wreck.

“He kept sobbing, ‘I can't go to jail, I'll be killed'.” Richard said he was warned: “Don't talk to him, he's a batty boy (homosexual).”

The singer with hit Eighties band Culture Club had microwaved fish, chips and mushy peas in a plastic container for his first prison meal.

The inmate said: “It was bland. The dish was tastier than the fish. It must have been a shock.

"Conditions here are rubbish and so is the food, nothing like he's used to.

“Prison is a great leveller. George has been very quiet. He's not been crying but seems to be in another world and sleeps a lot.

Victim ... rent boy Audun

“They've put him in a cell with a Rasta guy to protect him and there is always a guard close by.”

But the inmate, who snapped George on a mobile phone, added: “A celeb is a celeb in here. People love fame. Everyone remembers Culture Club.”

George, real name George O'Dowd, was jailed for shackling Norwegian Audun Carlsen, 29, to a hook at his flat in Shoreditch, East London, and hitting him with a chain.

Boy George sits forlornly on a bed in his tiny jail cell signing autographs for fellow prisoners.

It is the first picture of the fallen pop star since he was jailed on Friday.

A prison source said George's cellmate, a large Jamaican called Dread, is acting as his minder. He added: “The prison authorities thoughthe might be picked on for being weak so they are paying this guy with cigarettes and polo mints to protect him.

“They are normally given to new inmates as an one-off but this guy is getting regular supplies to look after George.”

The source said ex-Culture Club singer George, 47, who has been wearing a T-shirt featuring a pair of glittery handcuffs, needed a minder because he seemed disorientated by life in London's Pentonville Prison.

He added: “It's like he's in another world. He looks scared.

“He keeps forgetting where his cell is whenever he leaves it. He loses his bearings.” The source said prisoners have been flocking to meet the singer, whose real name is George O'Dowd. He added: “They go to his cell all day in twos and threes for autographs.

He added: “He broke down in the van to the jail and received a bit of abuse for crying.

“The officer told him to keep his head up. He was offered a place on the vulnerable prisoner wing but turned it down. Instead he is with the normal population, from murderers to remand prisoners.”

Dread is believed to be on remand facing burglary charges.

George, a recovering junkie, is said to have been horrified when he arrived in his cell to find the sheets had not been changed since the last inmate.

He asked for fresh sheets and was issued with some.

press mirror + Boy George sobs 'They'll kill me' to inmate | 18 janvier 2009

Cell mate tells of blind panic when he told Boy George: 'You're gay and a celebrity - the other prisoners will come after you.'

Boy George (Pic: Pixel)

Terrified Boy George wept as he was sent to prison and said: “I can't go to jail... they will try to kill me because of who I am.”

The fallen pop idol broke down and revealed his fears to a fellow prisoner in a court holding cell before he was sent to tough Pentonville Prison in North London.

Richard Lyttle, a father of five held in the same cells on a driving charge, told the bloated former Culture Club singer how to survive life at the category B prison.

But he warned him: “Prisoners will be out to beat you up.”

Richard, 40, from Romford, East London, said: “When I walked into the cell I saw this fat, bald bloke sitting in the corner crying like a baby. He was shaking like a leaf, a total wreck.

“He kept sobbing over and over, ‘I can't go to jail – I'll be killed.'

“He was crying about how he was just a fat old pop star that everyone was laughing at.”

George, 47 (real name George O'Dowd) was put in a holding cell at Snaresbrook Court, East London, with five other men on Friday afternoon. He was held there after a judge sentenced him to 15 months for falsely imprisoning Norwegian male escort Audun Carlsen, 29, and thrashing him with a chain.

Richard said that as he walked into the cell one of the other prisoners was hurling abuse at the gay singer. “The bloke was shouting, ‘Don't talk to him, he is a batty boy.' (offensive Jamaican term for a homosexual).

“I walked over to him and said, ‘What's the problem, mate?'

“He looked and me and said, ‘I'm George O'Dowd.' I was confused and he screamed, ‘I'm Boy George.' He broke down in tears and couldn't stand up because he was so upset.

“All the other prisoners were shouting at him to stop making so much noise so he just kept his head bowed. I felt a bit sorry for him.”

Unemployed Richard, who was later bailed for driving while disqualified, has been locked up three times for assorted driving offences and for attempting to obtain money with malice.

He explained to George how he would have his mobile phone taken from him when he arrived and that he would be strip-searched before being put in a prison uniform and locked up.

Richard said: “He was shaking as he listened and kept asking what other inmates would make of him. I warned him that because of who he was and because he was gay people would be out to beat him up.”

George, who sold more than 25 million records with his band Culture Club in the 1980s, then broke down again, mumbling that nobody would have any sympathy for him.

Richard said: “He said he felt all alone and wouldn't be able to cope in prison. He was gutted, emotional and just all over the place.”

As Richard was called back into court from the cell, George grabbed his hand and begged him to look after him if they both ended up in Pentonville. “He was pleading with me to look after him. I said I wasn't going to be sent down and he just broke down again,” he said.

“I joked that it wasn't all bad and said he might even find himself a new boyfriend inside prison. But he just started crying again. As I walked out he was a shaking, quivering wreck. There is no way he will cope inside.”

Yesterday George, a former heroin addict and a recovering cocaine addict, was put on suicide watch after arriving at Pentonville.

He was also moved to the hospital wing to keep him away from the prison's other 1,000-plus inmates.

Jail insiders revealed the former singer was mobbed by other prisoners when he walked into the reception area, some asking for his autograph. A jail source told the Sunday Mirror: “Governors took the decision to move Boy George to the hospital wing for his own safety.

“He is openly gay, and also a celebrity, which makes him a massive target for somebody who wants to make a name for themselves.

“Boy George would be extremely vulnerable in a normal wing and his safety could not be guaranteed.”

Prison guards have been told to regularly check to make sure he is not harming himself, or is in danger of attack.

While in the hospital wing – where Amy Winehouse's husband Blake Fielder-Civil was recently held – George will undergo psychological assessment.

His family and friends gasped as he was jailed for 15 months on Friday. In April 2007 he shackled Audun to a hook on a bedroom wall in his flat in Shoreditch, East London, and thrashed him with a chain.

George told police he detained Carlsen, who he had met through the Gaydar website, while he investigated suspicions that the Norwegian had tampered with his laptop computer. But Carlsen said the singer concocted that story after tying him up as punishment for not having sex with him at an earlier meeting.

Before jailing George, Judge David Radford told him: “Your pre-meditated, calculated, callous and

humiliating handcuffing and detention of Mr Carlsen shocked, degraded and traumatised him.”

Because of his conviction, George is now unlikely to be granted a visa allowingt to perform again in the

US and Japan, where he is still a huge star.

'Drug-crazed idiot' Boy George jailed for 15 months for chaining male escort to wall and beating him

Boy George was jailed for 15 months yesterday for falsely imprisoning a male escort.

The former Culture Club singer  -  real name George O'Dowd  -  shackled Audun Carlsen to a wall of his flat and lashed him with a chain while shouting insults at him.

The 29-year-old Norwegian managed to free himself and fled in his underpants into the street, screaming for help.

Facing the music: George O'Dowd on the way to court, where he was condemned for his 'premeditated, callous, drug-fuelled actions' which 'traumatised' his victim

In court yesterday, O'Dowd's own barrister admitted that his client's career had hit rock bottom and likened the behaviour of the two men to 'two drug-crazed idiots'.

Adrian Waterman added that the cost of the incident would be 'truly enormous', adding: 'He will not now very likely ever be permitted to perform in the U.S and Japan where he has a very, very significant fan base. The humiliation of this is going to live with him for ever.'

The singer's defence team also said he would struggle to raise the £5,000 he has been ordered to pay in costs.

Boy George

Snaresbrook Crown Court in East London had heard that the incident happened in April 2007. Matters turned to violence after O'Dowd suspected Mr Carlsen had hacked into a laptop and stolen pictures taken when the pair first met three months earlier.

O'Dowd, who noticeably gained weight during his trial, was convicted of false imprisonment last year. Yesterday he was sentenced by Judge David Radford, who told him he had been guilty of 'gratuitous violence'.

Condemning his 'premeditated', ' callous' and drug-fuelled frenzy which 'traumatised' Mr Carlsen, the judge said his victim had been 'deprived of his liberty and his human dignity'.

Audun Carlsen

'Lashed': Audun Carlsen

He said the offence was 'so serious that only an immediate sentence of imprisonment can be justified'.

O'Dowd has repeatedly denied swinging the chain at the younger man.

But Mr Carlsen claimed the theft story was concocted to justify the 'punishment' meted out to him for refusing to have sex with O'Dowd at an earlier meeting.

The pair had made contact through the Gaydar website. Heather Norton, prosecuting, said their first meeting went well until the singer suspected Mr Carlsen of hacking in to his computer.

They parted on good terms and O'Dowd paid the younger man £300 of the £400 they had agreed.

In the weeks that followed, they exchanged emails in which the singer accused Mr Carlsen of tampering with his computer. But he eventually appeared to relent and arranged to see the younger man again.

At the second meeting, O'Dowd beckoned his victim into his bedroom, before he and an unidentified man leapt on him, wrestled him to the floor and started beating him.

Mr Carlsen was dragged along the floor towards O'Dowd's bed and a manacle was put on his right hand and attached to a hook drilled in the wall.

The second man left, Mr Carlsen said, and O'Dowd fetched a plastic box containing chains, sex toys and leather straps.

Giving evidence, Mr Carlsen told the court: 'George hit me, slapped me, and screamed, "****ing whore, ****. Now you are going to get what you deserve".'

He said he was able to unscrew the hook from the wall using handcuffs as a tool. He ran to the door with O'Dowd pursuing him while wielding the metal chain. The victim managed to escape and ran out into the street.

O'Dowd previously suggested that bruises Mr Carlsen sustained could have been due to the fact he was HIV positive.

The singer did not give evidence in court  -  his brother David O'Dowd said it was because he wanted to protect their elderly mother.

Boy George

The flamboyant singer has repeatedly reinvented himself as a solo artist, club DJ and writer of musicals

But Mr Waterman said the former star's continuing battle with cocaine addiction had contributed to his actions.

'He was not himself when addled by the habitual and relatively long-lasting using of illegal drugs,' he said.

But he said O'Dowd was making a concerted effort to deal with his drug addiction.

He added: 'This defendant is a kind and generous man who is particularly mindful of others' needs. He is the antithesis of the haughty bullying star.'

As he heard his fate, O'Dowd looked worriedly towards the public gallery, where relatives gasped as they heard the length of the jail term. One male family member kicked one of the courtroom doors, shouting: 'Fifteen months!'

It was all a far cry from the heights O'Dowd scaled with Culture Club in the 1980s. They had a string of hits and sold millions of records in the UK and abroad.

But in 1985 O'Dowd was exposed as a heroin addict and his career plunged into freefall. Drugs problems and internal feuding led to Culture Club's demise in 1987.

However, the singer bounced back to launch a successful career as a solo artist in the late 1980s and in the 1990s he reinvented himself as a DJ.

But there was more scandal in 2006 when he admitted falsely reporting a burglary at his apartment in New York. He was ordered to perform community service and found himself sweeping the city's streets.

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF BOY GEORGE'S CAREER

Boy George has courted controversy ever since bursting on to the music scene in the 1980s.

The entertainer caused shockwaves with his outlandish clothing and androgynous appearance as lead singer of the pop band Culture Club.

Since then the flamboyant singer from Eltham, London, has repeatedly reinvented himself as a solo artist, club DJ and writer of musicals, while simultaneously attracting headlines for a variety of scandals.

boy george

Boy George, centre, with Culture Club in their Eighties heyday

Boy George was first thrust into the limelight with Culture Club's 1982 number one hit Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?

The band followed that with another huge number one, Karma Chameleon, in 1983, and sold millions of records in the UK and abroad.

But controversy has always stalked the musician and in the mid-1980s he was exposed by the tabloids as a heroin addict.

Further drugs problems and internal feuding led to Culture Club's eventual demise shortly after.

The singer bounced back to launch another successful career as a solo artist in the late 1980s, and reinvented himself once again a decade later as a critically acclaimed DJ.

In 2003, Boy George moved to the US when his autobiographical musical Taboo transferred to Broadway.

But his previous drugs troubles returned to haunt him in 2005 when he was arrested in New York on suspicion of possessing cocaine.

The charge was eventually dropped, but the singer was given community service in 2006 after pleading guilty to falsely reporting a burglary at his New York apartment.

The revelations from his trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court have thrust Boy George, who famously once said he preferred 'a nice cup of tea' to sex, into the public eye for the wrong reasons once again.
