About shapes of things

QUESTION:
The project description on the website says that all submissions must be half-discs or spheres. By half-disc, do you mean a semi-circular shape; as in a half-moon? By sphere, do you mean a 2-dimensional circle shaded to look spherical?
ANSWER:
English translation text was wrong (not translator's fault, but typer's lack of sleep). Text was corrected logically - discs or half-spheres.
That's to say circular shapes with at least one flat face. As simple and practical as can be. More: moon may be full, half, or quarter.

QUESTION:
In order to be more specific about what shapes are acceptable, I've attached a picture to this email with 5 shapes in it.
I'm assuming that shapes 1 and 2 represent what you describe below as acceptable shapes. Would shape 3, 4, or 5 be acceptable as well?
The reason I ask is that you say that comets, asteroids, and stars are acceptable as subjects.
However, I can't imagine doing a comet with just a circular shape to work within.
ANSWER:
All shapes you propose are ok. You can do that, OR things like that, it's just few suggestions among others.
Please have a thought for us, poor mosaists in charge to include all this in a white background:
so avoid too much complexity in shapes since everyone knows how long it can be to fill a lot of tiny spaces."

About trusty substrates

QUESTION:
can you tell me what substrate you are expecting entries to be shipped to you on? Should they be on fiberglass mesh, or some more solid substrate like Wedi Board?
If a more solid substrate, what thickness are you expecting?
ANSWER:
fiberglasss mesh is perfect. If you experienced reversed method on paper, you can use it and send us the even lighter reversed mosaic on its paper substrate.
More solid substrate (like Wedi, good) is right too, with this little trick you pointed out: thickness.
Since each planet will be inserted within the white background figuring the empty space), you understand too much thickness may be problematic.
Whenever possible we will level this background up, as to fit the planet's thickness. Whenever possible. A 2 cms thickness should be hard to deal with...

About whole picture and composition

QUESTION:
Can you tell me a little more about the whole picture you are trying to create-- will submitted pieces represent just the 9 planets of our solar system
(and thus, will only 9 entries be accepted), or will the completed piece represent a more fanciful version of a solar system with many planets?
Is there a desire for comets, asteroids, stars, and other items of that nature, or just planets?
ANSWER:
More like a fanciful version of the solar system with many planets. Comets, asteroids, stars, whatever you should think of will be good.
Just take a look at the several pictures we published in the 5 languages releases of project text: they present my own study for this project (100x120 cms).
I did not put comets in it, just because i did not think of comets at that time :)) comets welcome. I mean to deal with solar system as one part of the universe.
So the 9 planets shall be there, and the moon we all love. I just wait to see what people send us to stop on a specific composition line: why not see the cosmos from some place near the moon,
with earth and 8 other planets in sight ? why not from near Mars etc., etc... In the whole, wall should look the same: white background with planets figuring cosmos.

About dates and deadlines

QUESTION:
Finally, can you tell me the submission deadline and the date that assembly of all the submissions will begin?
ANSWER:
Deadline for finished project is 15 june 2006. We shall insert all sendings we possibly can. There too our translation went wrong..i corrected and added 15 April 2006 as sendings deadline.
Can you imagine we refuse sendings received on 15 may ? i can't. We'll do our best to include all valuable sendings, until the very last day.
Work will begin around Easter, a little earlier if we received enough planets to stop on a specific composition.
Mosaic will be realised on site (we have a 2 hours mosaic class there each wednesday and free access to the room from 8 a.m to 8 p.m and even later).
Not direct on wall but on rigid plastic boards instead, we'll cover the wall with first.

About grout and finishing touches

QUESTION:
Are you expecting that our submissions already be grouted, or will you grout the whole picture once all submissions are installed?
ANSWER:
Background will be grouted white, no questions about that. In order to let planets fully shine we'll grout them according to each one's specific colors.
Some should not be grouted at all. Mosaist's suggestion - when possible - we shall apply.
