  • Massacre à la bouteille d'eau : la Thailande célèbre Songkran.
    Thailand under attack, Songkran festival
    Photo from Bangkok Post

Songkran is the thai new year, based on the buddhist lunar calendar. From the 13th to the 15th of april, Thai people come back to their mother distric to celebrate the water festival. The ritual is to give respect to the people by arrosing them, old women and child included. This is the theory.

The practice is far more extreme: some pick-ups full of kids with water guns and buckets of water are doing patrol around their neighborhood, cops are wet and looks like ghost, recovered of talc (a revenge against their corruption!!!!!!), some thai workers completely canned by the whisky are splashing everything that move with their buckets; last but not least this is in some crowded streets of Bangkok that the real battles are taking place: thousands of persons loom from the skytrain, from their pick-ups, from tuk-tuks et make a real urban war where the riots of Los Angeles would look like a small family conflict.

That's what I've seen, but what I've done was a bit different. I am the only white man in my alley (soi in thai), and this made me a good target. I was invited by my favorite street food store to drink whisky. I didn't have even sit that a grandma passed behind me and empty her bucket in my back and a kid whiten me with his box of talc. To go out of the soi was not that easy too, I had been attacked by kids and talc recovered 2-3 times more. After a dozen of showers, I decide to join a team of young thai people, specialized in bus bombing, aming especially the ones who had windows stucked. A real guerilla where everybody is smiling.

Also, it is not really well seen to complain, during Sonkran the cops have even to accept the ritual with a smile. Often the person who is coming to splash you, apologizes in advance, to thank him or her is well seen. No problem, especially when the outside temperature reach 38C.

PS: Now you know why I didn't took any photos.
